The washerman's harsh words was one of the reasons Ram decided to
send Sita away into the jungles. The washerman's wife had committed
adultery and in one of the tellings is beaten up by her husband because of
her unchaste behavior. The washerman's wife is a witness to the things he
says and although there isn't any account of her experience, I made my own.

I find this incident interesting because I find that in the epic the women share a very
peculiar relationship and in this case, i feel there is empathy for Sita, as someone in a similar position
and also helplessness. She knows, neither she nor Sita can change their fate.
At this point in the story, Sita is not only the princess, but a comparison in drawn
between her and scores of other women who are treated like her by their husbands.

  1. I really appreciate that you have given a voice to someone who appears in the story only as 'object' of the washerman's anger and jealous feelings - she is a subject in her own right and you have noticed that!
